UPSC Mains Result 2026: Expected Date, How to Check the PDF, Cut Off & What Comes Next

Status update (17 October 2026): The Union Public Service Commission has not yet announced an official date for the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2026 written result. Everything below about the date is a trend-based estimate — the one place to trust for the real announcement is upsc.gov.in. This article will be updated the moment the result is declared.

When Was the Mains 2026 Exam Held?

The Civil Services (Main) Examination 2026 was conducted from 21 to 30 August 2026, with the Essay and General Studies papers in the first phase and the language and optional-subject papers after that. The written stage carries 1,750 marks across nine papers, and only candidates who cleared the Prelims (held 24 May 2026) were eligible to sit for it.

Expected Result Date: Early to Mid-November 2026

UPSC does not announce a result date in advance, but its track record is remarkably consistent: the Mains written result typically lands 60 to 75 days after the last paper. That puts the 2026 result in early to mid-November 2026 (roughly 10–20 November).

The closest parallel is last year:

Year Last Mains paper Written result declared Gap
2025 31 August 2025 11 November 2025 ~72 days
2026 30 August 2026 Expected: early–mid November 2026 —

Apply the same gap to this year’s 30 August finish and you land in the first half of November 2026. Treat any forwarded message claiming a “confirmed” date with suspicion — UPSC announces it only on its own website.

How to Check the UPSC Mains Result 2026

When the result is out, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the official UPSC website: upsc.gov.in.
  2. Open Examination → Written Results (or look under “What’s New” on the homepage).
  3. Click the link titled “Written Result: Civil Services (Main) Examination, 2026”.
  4. Download the PDF and press Ctrl + F (or “Find” on your phone) to search for your roll number.
  5. Save a copy of the PDF — you’ll need it through the interview stage.

UPSC usually releases the list roll-number-wise, and sometimes a separate name-wise list as well. Our UPSC result guide explains all three result stages in detail.

What the Result PDF Shows — and What It Doesn’t

  • It lists the roll numbers of candidates shortlisted for the Personality Test, in ascending order.
  • It does not show marks. Mains marksheets are released only after the final result.
  • The notice attached to the PDF carries instructions for DAF-II (the Detailed Application Form for the interview stage) and the interview schedule. Read the full notice, not just the roll-number list. We have also prepared a complete DAF-II form-filling and interview guide covering all 9 sections, service and cadre preferences, and Personality Test preparation.

How Many Candidates Will Qualify for the Interview?

UPSC generally calls about two to two-and-a-half times the number of vacancies for the Personality Test. With 933 vacancies per the official notification, roughly 1,900 to 2,300 candidates can expect an interview call this year. For comparison, in 2025 a total of 2,736 candidates qualified for the interview against 979 vacancies.

Cut-off Context

UPSC releases the official cut-off marks only along with the final result, so there is no official Mains 2026 cut-off yet. For reference, the General-category Mains cut-off in recent years was:

  • 2024: 729 marks
  • 2023: 741 marks

(Compiled from UPSC’s official cut-off PDFs; the figures match across independent portals.) Any “expected 2026 cut-off” number floating around right now is an unverified guess. See our UPSC cut-off explainer for how cut-offs work at each stage.

What Happens After the Written Result

  1. DAF-II window: Qualified candidates fill the Detailed Application Form-II and upload documents on the UPSC portal.
  2. E-summon letters: Interview call letters are made available for download on upsc.gov.in in due course.
  3. Personality Test: Interviews are held at UPSC’s office, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi — expected to begin in early 2027. Read our interview process guide to know what the board assesses.
  4. Final result: The merit list combines Mains (1,750) + Interview (275) = 2,025 marks. Expected in spring 2027.
