The UPSC Interview (Personality Test) is a 25–30 minute conversation with a UPSC board, worth 275 marks. It is not a knowledge test — your Mains already proved your knowledge. The board is judging your personality.

.
What the Board Actually Assesses
- Clarity and balance — can you see multiple sides of an issue and still take a stand?
- Awareness — of current affairs, your home state, your graduation subject and your hobbies
- Integrity and empathy — the core civil-service values, tested through situational questions
- Composure — how you handle pressure, disagreement and questions you cannot answer
Where UPSC Interview Questions Come From
Mostly from your Detailed Application Form (DAF) — your education, work experience, hobbies, home state and optional subject — plus major current affairs. Fill your DAF with complete honesty; every single line is a potential question, and boards are skilled at spotting exaggeration.
How to Prepare
- Read the newspaper deeply — opinion and editorials, not just news
- Prepare 2-minute honest answers on: why civil services, your strengths/weaknesses, your DAF points
- Take 3–5 mock interviews (many are free for Mains qualifiers) — the value is in the feedback, especially on body language and structuring answers
- Stay yourself — the board spots rehearsed, coached personalities quickly, and it backfires
Marks Reality Check
Interview scores typically range from about 120 to 200+. A strong interview can lift your final rank by 50–100 places — but it cannot rescue a weak Mains. The Mains is still where the rank is made.
