IAS officers run the civil administration (districts, ministries, policy); IPS officers lead the police (law & order, crime, internal security). Both are All India Services recruited through the same UPSC CSE — your rank and preference decide which you get.

IAS vs IPS — Compared Side by Side

Which Should You Choose?
Choose IAS if you want the widest canvas — districts, ministries, PSUs, even international deputations — and the top administrative authority in a district. Choose IPS if policing, field action and internal security excite you; it is more physically demanding and operationally intense. Both reach Secretary-level posts; neither is “better” — they are different jobs.
How the Allocation Works
