Prelims is an objective screening test (marks don’t count); Mains is a descriptive written exam (1750 marks decide your rank). They test different skills and need different preparation.

UPSC Prelims vs Mains — Compared
| Aspect | Prelims | Mains |
|---|---|---|
| Format | MCQs (objective) | Descriptive (written answers) |
| Papers | 2 (GS + CSAT) | 9 (Essay, GS I–IV, Optional ×2, 2 qualifying) |
| Marks | 400 — not counted for merit | 1750 — decides your rank |
| Negative marking | Yes (1/3rd) | No |
| What it tests | Breadth, speed, accuracy, elimination skill | Depth, analysis, presentation, writing stamina |
| Qualifiers | ~10–12 thousand | ~2–3 thousand reach the interview |
The Big Strategic Mistake
Most beginners prepare “only for Prelims first” — then discover after clearing it that they have barely 3 months to learn answer writing for the Mains, and collapse. Toppers prepare both together: read every topic with one eye on MCQs and one eye on a 150-word answer.
How to Balance Both
- Daily: newspaper + static subject study (serves both)
- Weekly: 2–3 Mains answers written and reviewed + 1 prelims sectional quiz
- Last 3 months before Prelims: shift 70% effort to Prelims-specific revision and mocks — then flip back to Mains mode the day after the exam
