The UPSC CSE has three stages: Prelims (objective, 400 marks, screening only), Mains (descriptive, 1750 merit marks) and the Interview (275 marks). Final merit is based on Mains + Interview = 2025 marks.
.
Stage 1 — Preliminary Examination
| Paper | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| GS Paper I | 100 | 200 | 2 hours |
| CSAT Paper II | 80 | 200 (qualifying — need 33%) | 2 hours |
Both papers are objective (MCQ) with negative marking of 1/3rd per wrong answer. Prelims marks are not counted in the final merit — it is purely a screening test (roughly 10–12 thousand of 10+ lakh applicants qualify for Mains).
Stage 2 — Main Examination
Nine papers in total: two qualifying language papers (300 marks each, need 25%), then seven merit papers — Essay (250), GS I–IV (250 each) and two Optional papers (250 each). All are descriptive, 3 hours each, conducted over about a week.
Stage 3 — Personality Test
A 25–30 minute interview before a UPSC board, worth 275 marks. It tests personality, awareness and balanced judgement — not bookish knowledge.
Exam Pattern Key Takeaways
Prelims demands speed and accuracy; Mains demands depth and presentation; the Interview demands personality. Prepare for all three together from day one — never “only Prelims first”.
